Curriculum Breakdown Massage Theory, Practice and Related Studies | 225 hours This course will begin with the history of massage throughout the world. This is also the bulk of the hands-on aspect of the program. Students will learn to administer a complete, professional, therapeutic massage. Swedish being the foundation and most other styles being off-shoots, students will learn all traditional Swedish techniques. Related studies will include: range of motion and other sports massage techniques, therapeutic stretching, basic Shiatsu points, pre-natal massage, hydrotherapy, and table/body mechanics. . Also included in this module will be introductory workshops in: Thai Massage, Reiki, Chair Massage, Hydrotherapy, Hot Stone Massage, Prenatal Massage, Aromatherapy, Oriental Medicine and Shiatsu. Reflexology will also be included in this module. Students will obtain a general working knowledge of main reflexology points and massage techniques of the hands and feet and their relationship to organs and glands of the boy. This Oriental technique has used for thousands of years to effect positive changes such as improved blood flow, relief of tension, increased energy, and to normalize body function Anatomy/Physiology and Pathology | 125 hours The student will learn the systems of the body and how they relate to massage/bodywork. The muscular and skeletal systems will be studied and discussed at length. The student will understand and appreciate the effects of massage on the functions of the human body. Body movement or "Kinesiology" will also he discussed. Through text, hands-on instruction and cadaver dissection videos, students will become confident in their knowledge of the structure and functions of the human body. The use of a skeleton in class will also reinforce learning. Pathology and contraindications will cover conditions that can be contrary to massage/bodywork. Whether working in a clinical setting or a salon, the competent massage/bodywork therapist must know when and what techniques should be avoided. Certain physical and mental conditions warrant caution, or may restrict the work completely. The student will learn what signs to look for and when to obtain a physician's O.K. Also included in this course will be three hours of instruction dealing with HIV/AIDS awareness. Universal precautions for the massage/bodywork therapist will be discussed while respecting the client's privacy and lifestyle choices. Neuromuscular Technique | 48 hours
Professional Ethics | 8 hours Business Law, Practices and Marketing | 6 hours The focus of this course will be on enabling the graduate to compete successfully and excel in the field. Students will be taught sound, proven business principles including: recordkeeping, creative marketing, advertising on a budget, communicating effectively with clients and others in the health field, as well as current state laws. Student Clinic| 100 hours Students will provide therapeutic massage/bodywork to the public. Students will document clinical practice. This is extremely beneficial not only as practice for the student, but in learning to deal effectively with clients. Clinic offered through the school will be offered at low cost to the public. The public will have the opportunity to be introduced to this professional art and its benefits, and the students will experience an outstanding learning opportunity. Students must be certified in CPR by the end of the entire program. |
